Council Leadership - delivering new homes and communities
This week's housebuilding figures continue to be a cause of concern - with the Financial Times reporting a sharp fall of around 20% in new housing starts in the financial year to March 2024, the lowest level in a decade.
But against the broader challenges in the market there are councils and council leaders who are leading the way in housing delivery for their communities.
This week I visited an inspiring large development which is being delivered by Eastleigh Borough Council under the leadership of Cllr Keith House.
One Horton Heath is demonstrating that municipal muscle can deliver large scale developments to a high environmental and design standard, meeting local needs, putting environmental habitat protection and infrastructure delivery first.
This is an ambitious project. It builds on Eastleigh's track record of housing construction, which in recent years has seen a number of high quality projects delivered by the council for the benefit of the local community.
