Housing: The Political and Delivery Landscape

Housing: the Political and Delivery Landscape after the Autumn Budget 2024

A pleasure to deliver the keynote speech on the political and delivery landscape for housing in Kent today. The key themes:

- The target for 1.5m homes this Parliament/ 300k a year is a welcome return to housing ambition
- But planning reform alone can't deliver the homes needed
- The Mansion House speech and the Spring Budget will be pivotal for signposting that 'housing for growth' is still a key part of the government's growth agenda (after little focus on this in the Autumn Budget)
- Harnessing institutional investment and private finance in a smart way alongside government funding will be key to financing housing delivery this Parliament
- That means the right regulatory, legal and financial frameworks to support long term and sustainable housing investment at scale, as well as partnership working.

The delivery backdrop is immensely challenging - from Grenfell, damp and mould to environmental requirements and net zero.

I was pleased to meet with a range of attendees from councils, house builders, professionals and housing associations - demonstrating the importance of partnership working.

There were also good panel discussions on community engagement and social impact as well as the importance of designing and creating inclusive business environments and community spaces.
