The HFi at RESI 2018

The HFi would like to thank all those local authorities who took advantage of our complimentary ticket offer to attend RESI 2018. Especially those who visited our 'Local Authority Zone', created especially for the local authorities who are working hard to build more homes, faster.

The conference was a great success, discussing our research, and sharing our thoughts and proposals on the housing sector with delegates. There was a great deal of interest in our latest paper – A Time for Good Homes – as well as what can be done to increase the speed of housing infrastructure, in particular, broadband connectivity. The message to us was clear, engagement with local authorities is of the utmost importance.

Our Chief Executive, Natalie Elphicke OBE, was joined by James Murray, Tony Pidgley CBE, Tom Walker and Mark Easton on the main stage panel 'Question Time: Why are we no closer to solving the housing crisis?'.

The 'Question Time' style session dealt with a range of housing issues. The issues of planning, land banking and affordable housing came-up time and time again. In a snap poll conducted during the session, the view of the delegates was that 'red tape' was the biggest obstacle to solving the housing crisis.

Natalie highlighted the positive work that some councils are undertaking and our work at HFI to build skills and capacity through our Housing Business Ready programme. As well as the importance of building more homes in tenures that support good outcomes for people, as outlined in our latest Good Homes report with Radian housing association.
